Climate change is a public health issue. As public health professionals, we are in the unique position of playing an important role in both keeping people healthy and addressing the impacts of climate change. Thankfully, these twin goals are not incompatible, but we must act — and we must act now.

APHA convened a virtual summit with leaders from public health, environmental science, faith-based and other community organizations to reach consensus on what the most important steps for the public health community should be in the fight against climate change. We have come to realize that much work has already been done by our colleagues in the field, but as a community, we have never attempted to reach consensus about our collective role in preventing and responding to
climate change.

It is with that in mind that we present to you the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) first step toward a blueprint for the public health community’s approach to climate change. We believe these recommendations focus on what is feasible and where it is critical for public health to engage in the discussion and fight against climate change.

The following organizations and individuals have indicated their support as we move forward and try to address the pressing needs that are part of all of our daily work. To sign-on in support of these recommendations, click here.
