Exploring Unnatural Causes of Health with the Georgia Public Health Association

In order to raise awareness of the effect of social determinants, specifically socioeconomic and employment status, on the health, the Georgia Public Health Association (GPHA) will be hosting a screening and discussion of "Unnatural Causes." Events for the evening include: -Audience participation in Archie Bunker's Neighborhood, a game in which participants are separated into different economic groups (an affluent community, a middle-class community, and a low-income community) and hope to build up their communities with a given amount resources. Audience members are unaware of which economic bracket they have been placed and must compete with each other to provide schools, businesses, and other community necessities for their neighborhood. -Screening of Unnatural Causes: Episode 7 Not Just a Paycheck (www.unnaturalcauses.org) -Refreshments will be served!

In the attempt to expand the knowledge of our community to a global setting, EGHO and the Center for Health, Culture and Society will be hosting a lecture by Professor Kate Winskell on her program "Scenarios from Africa," which is an annual competition held across Africa for youth to submit original scenarios (a play, story, song, etc) on HIV/AIDS. The top scenarios are then selected to be made into short films produced by a well-known African director and distributed across the continent in multiple languages. Professor Winskell's presentation will be followed by "DOHO" - Wanjiku's Nightmare (unofficial working title), a play by Emory Health Culture and Society Fellow, Oby Obyerodhyambo, which tells the story of Wanjiku, a disgraced Kenyan woman accused of crimes of passion. The play takes place in the offices of a strong willed Kenyan lawyer. The drama played out in the lawyer's offices challenge the audience to consider the implications of violence, sexuality and gender roles on societys perceptions of justice. After the reading, a panel of faculty members from Emory's various graduate programs will lead a discussion on the play. The Momentum Walk It Challenge

The Momentum Walk-It Challenge offers both enrolling and current Weight Watchers members free access to an online, eight-week exercise training program. People will receive access to a special Web site where they can join walking teams and sign up for local 5K walks between April 12 and June 6. In addition, all participants who complete the program will receive a Presidential Award Certificate from the 2009 President's Challenge. The President's Challenge is a program that is part of The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and encourages all Americans to make being active part of their everyday lives. Weight Watchers partnered with The Active Network, a leading online community that promotes exercise, to develop this special online program for Weight Watchers' members. The goal of the Momentum Walk-it Challenge is to show Americans how easy it is to get moving towards better health and will connect people into mini-social networks to walk together and train towards an attainable goal.
