Hopes are high that the first Let's Walk Greenwood! will get people motivated to get off the couch and start walking. The walk coincides with National Public Health Week, which began Monday and runs through Sunday. The event will feature free health screenings and will also include pointers on developing a regular walking regimen, Freeman said.
Some of those expected to be on site Saturday include:
Mississippi Valley State University's Health Initiative
Dr. Preston Boles, podiatrist
Lilly Stanley of Communities in Schools
The Mississippi Community Education Center
Cathey Brownlow, Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator at Valley
Allied Health students of the Greenwood School District's Vocational Center
Greenwood Leflore Hospital
A representative of Valleys Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department
Margaret Watkins of Leland, who will talk about the benefits of developing and sticking with a walking program.
Light refreshments, courtesy of Greenwood Market Place, will be served. A trophy will be presented to the ward with the most participants.
Let's Walk Greenwood is for all ages, Freeman said.
We encourage parents to bring their kids, he said.
