Get started with the APHA Keep It Moving app.
Evidence shows that consistent physical activity helps prevent chronic disease, improve quality of life, maintain mental health and promote healthy aging. With our new app, you can track any kind of physical activity and convert it into distance to contribute to the challenge. If you participated in the Billion Steps Challenge in the past, you might be looking for ways to increase your walking, especially as COVID-19 continues to keep many of us at home. You can absolutely keep walking and running as your primary activity this year! But maybe also try getting more engaged with community events and activities. By focusing on activities, we can make sure everyone finds a fun way to get moving and compete in the challenge.
The 2023 Challenge begins Jan. 1 and runs through April 9, the last day of APHA’s celebration of National Public Health Week. No matter how big or small your group will be, we make it easy for you to get people moving.
Let’s start a movement for active communities!
The Keep It Moving Challenge supports national health promotion efforts, including the Move Your Way campaign by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion to educate the public on the second edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The COVID-19 pandemic has kept most of us indoors, which has made it harder to stay physically active. We’re hoping to create a movement to encourage people to get active every day, even while spending most of our time at home and keeping our physical distance as we adjust to a new normal.
The Keep It Moving Challenge is fun, healthy and a great platform for starting larger conversations about the intersections among community, culture and active living. From Jan. 1 to April 9, we hope you’ll get your community involved in participating in the challenge. We know we can reach our goal of more than a billion collective steps!
